The McElwain Prizes for 2009 have been awarded to Dr Gert Attard (Novel Biomarkers and Therapeutics for Castration Resistant Prostate Cancer) and Dr Susie Banerjee (Interaction between VEGF and Oestrogen Signalling in Breast Cancer). Dr Attard will present his work on Tuesday 6th October at the NCRI Cancer Conference in Birmingham. Applications will be invited for the McElwain Prizes (£1,000) early in 2010. These annual awards have been established by the friends and colleagues of Professor Tim McElwain to commemorate his extraordinary contributions to the development of Medical Oncology in the UK. They are open to trainees in Medical Oncology who are members of the Association of Cancer Physicians.

McElwain Prize: Up to two prizes will be awarded annually to UK trainees in Medical Oncology who have performed high quality research on some aspect of clinical or basic research related to cancer. Applications should consist of: a) a summary of the research project (max 2 pages A4 (>10 font), excluding references, figures and tables); b) an abstract (up to 300 words); c) reprints of relevant published material, if available; d) a reference from the trainee's Head of Department or Research Supervisor. Applicants should also explain (max 100 words) what is their own work. The McElwain Prize winner will be invited to give a presentation at the NCRI Cancer Conference to be held at the International Convention Centre, Birmingham in October and also asked to present their work at the annual Cancer Physicians in Training weekend in November.
