Yet Another NHS Reorganisation
Sunday, 18 July 2010 09:03
AD
Despite previous assurances that there would be no further top-down reorganisation of the NHS after the election that is exactly what has been proposed by Health Secretary Andrew Lansley; read the House of Commons statement and responses here. This is likely to have significant implications for secondary health providers such as oncologists, and raises the possibility of increased competition from private providers, and risks fragmentation of local services. You can read interesting editorials at the BMJ here and eHealthInsider. Add your comments at the ACP forum at Doctors.net.
National Communication Skills Training
Thursday, 24 June 2010 00:00
AD
As part of peer review all members of cancer MDTs are now expected to take part in a 3-day communication skills course. This initiative will hopefully improve the general standards of communication by healthcare professionals, increase patient satisfaction, and reduce complaints. However whether members of the MDT who have already done training should be targeted could be discussed and the significant resource implications need to be considered. Doctors.net now hosts a comprehensive microsite with more information. Otherwise you can read about the scheme here and here. Dr Pauline Leonard, a medical oncologist involved in setting up the programme was interviewed for the Daily Telegraph. Pauline has kindly provided answers to some of the questions you may have and also comments from previous course attendees.

This iniative is a partnership between the DoH and Macmillan Cancer Support. It aims to provide services and support for those living with, and after treatment for, cancer. There are a number of strands which you can read about here. Some work is being done on a self-assessment tool for cancer survivors based on the Livestrong Care Plan, which produces a simple treatment record and information prescription suitable for an American population. In the 1000 People Project they are looking for doctors and patients to complete a survey on this tool which you can participate in here.

The National Awareness and Early Diagnosis Initiative (NAEDI)
Monday, 26 April 2010 11:08
AD
This initiative has been set up to promote the earlier diagnosis of cancer. As we know, some of the apparent poor outcomes of patients in the UK is due to late presentation to primary and secondary care, and therefore more advanced disease. This initiative has been set up with partnership between the Department of Health, National Cancer Action Team, and Cancer Research UK. You can read details at CRUK and NCIN.

- A great place to share views on relevant issues such as training, NCAG, NCEPOD, and even compare notes on tricky cases.

Acute Oncology Annual Update
Sunday, 28 March 2010 17:23
AD

This meeting organised by Peter Selby took place in Leeds on the 23rd March 2010. It was kindly supported by Amgen and Sanofi-Aventis. The focus was on the development of Acute Oncology services in response to the NCEPOD and NCAG reports. Other areas covered included the management of carcinoma of unknown primary; this dovetails with acute oncology services and will be addressed in upcoming NICE guidance. In addition delegates were given updates on critical care, cardiology, renal medicine and bone marrow transplantation. The main presentations are included here for download as pdfs. I have also included related presentations from the New Consultants Group meeting. UPDATE 17.05.2010: NEW PRESENTATIONS ONLINE. VIDEOS TO COME SOON.
