Improved management of sick patients with newly diagnosed cancer

E-mail Print PDF

The NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement has carried out a project looking at how people who are admitted as emergencies and then turn out to have cancer are managed. This information can be used to optimise pathways of care. You can read the background to this work and the report Focus on: Sick Patients with Suspected Cancer which was published in June 2009. It provides a useful resource on which to base service improvement; an OncoAlert tool has been developed.

National Clinical Excellence Awards for England and Wales 2012

E-mail Print PDF

Details of the successful applicants in the ACCEA 2011 round have now been published.  Please see the latest message from the ACCEA Chair and Medical Director for an update on the 2012 round.  The ACCEA has indicated that there will definitely be a renewals round in 2012, however it is still uncertain whether there will be a new national awards round, but these will not be open until the New Year. The ACP, as the specialist society for medical oncology, is registered with the ACCEA as a recognised body for submitting recommendations for national awards.  In previous years paid-up members who can demonstrate a significant contribution to the ACP, and to the specialty of Medical Oncology as a whole, have been invited to self-nominate for consideration for support by the ACP.   Please note that the ACP, as a specialist society, can only nominate for National Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards (not Platinum).  Please note however that the timelines and processes for 2012 are currently very uncertain.  However, Word versions of the application form can be downloaded from the ACCEA link to allow consultants to begin work, should they wish, on their applications before the launch of the 2012 round.

ACP Trainees Meeting 2010

E-mail Print PDF

This years trainees meeting was held at the City Inn (now Mint Hotel) in central Manchester. As usual it was a great opportunity for trainees from around the country to meet up for some useful education, as well as  socialising with colleagues and comparing notes on training at different centres. As usual the programme covered topics not always included in standard training courses. The value in networking with future consultant colleagues should not be underestimated.  You can download the programme here. Feedback from attendees, speakers and sponsors has been excellent and plans are now underway for the 2011 meeting to be held in the autumn.  Details of the date and venue will be posted here in due course.

There are a number of strands which you can read about here. Some work is being done on a self-assessment tool for cancer survivors based on the Livestrong Care Plan, which produces a simple treatment record and information prescription suitable for an American population. In the 1000 People Project they are looking for doctors and patients to complete a survey on this tool which you can participate in here.
